When making an overall design for the structure and strength of the newly built steel silo, at the same time, according to the corrosiveness and service life of the atmospheric environment in the construction area, the overall anti-corrosion design of the steel silo should be made according to local conditions. This includes reasonable material selection, anti-corrosion design of the silo cover rainwater diversion groove, avoidance of local water accumulation, surface protection and local reinforcement of the silo cover fastening bolts, nuts, pressure plates, and rainwater diversion grooves, anti-corrosion construction according to specifications and standards, and regular maintenance design after reaching the design life, etc., which should all be included in the overall design of the new silo.
In order to achieve a long service life of the steel silo, galvanized sheet with a corresponding galvanized layer thickness is selected as the basic structural material. In order to obtain a thick galvanized layer, sandblasting is more suitable than pickling for surface treatment before plating.
During the construction links such as factory prefabrication, transportation and loading and unloading, and on-site installation, efforts should be made to avoid mechanical damage such as scratches and bites on the surface of the galvanized steel sheet, especially to avoid large-area exposed iron damage.
For some parts of the overall structure that are not well protected, such as weld areas, bolts/nuts (due to assembly size limitations, they usually cannot achieve sufficient galvanized layer thickness), galvanized sheet bite areas, and weak links such as channel steel supporting the purlins of the silo cover that are often in a wet state, hot-spray galvanizing (or aluminum)/zinc-rich paint or chloroprene rubber paint should be performed and regular maintenance should be carried out to ensure the overall long service life.
In summary, in order to ensure that the steel silo, especially the steel silo in a highly corrosive atmospheric environment, has a sufficiently long service life and the lowest possible maintenance cost, corrosion protection is the key. A series of technical measures should be taken in various links such as overall design, material selection and construction, so that the performance and life of the steel silo can be fully guaranteed.
After the galvanized steel plate top cover was found to have a large range of exposed iron spots due to corrosion after six months of use, the maintenance plan of using rust phosphate treatment as surface pretreatment, two coats of epoxy iron red as primer, and two coats of acrylic modified alkyd resin paint as topcoat has at least the following problems: First, there is no successful precedent. Second, according to international standards, the steel surface must be sandblasted to remove rust/residual paint and attached organisms, and can only be repainted after reaching Sa2.5 level. Using rust phosphate treatment instead of sandblasting as surface pretreatment is an inappropriate surface pretreatment. Good adhesion between the paint and the base metal cannot be guaranteed.
The construction period of surface painting is winter, when rain, snow, ice and frost are frequent. Between each process, only wiping with a rag cannot ensure that the surface is dry between two processes. Therefore, environmental conditions that allow corrosion to develop rapidly are formed under the paint film.
